Good ‘ole soap and water does wonders for cleaning away germs, but sometimes there just isn’t any soap and water in sight! So what do you do with grimy little hands? If you are like most, you reach for your convenient little bottle of hand sanitizer to wash those germs away. But are you washing more than just germs away? Let’s look at what is actually in that tiny 2 oz. bottle!
First of all, most hand sanitizers have a great deal of alcohol in them. I’ve even read that children have been hospitalized for alcohol poisoning from them! Purell and Germ-X contain 62% ethyl alcohol, a little 2 oz. bottle = 4 shots of vodka!
Secondly, triclosan is an anti-bacterial ingredient used not only in hand sanitizers but also in a lot of personal care products. According to the EWG, it is linked to liver and inhalation toxicity, and low levels of triclosan may disrupt thyroid function. Wastewater treatment does not remove all of the chemical, which means it ends up in our lakes, rivers and water sources.
There are currently petitions being laid before the FDA to remove triclosan from the market, which is one of the key ingredients in Antibacterial Hand Sanitizers. Petitioners make six basic claims about the dangers of triclosan:
- Triclosan doesn’t work in consumer products.
- Triclosan’s widespread use increases the chances of harmful bacteria becoming resistant to the drug.
- Triclosan builds up in the body.
- Triclosan may disrupt human hormones.
- Triclosan can react with other chemicals to form dioxin and chloroform, which are known to be toxic.
- Triclosan contaminates water, affecting marine wildlife and ecosystems.
It’s useful to remember that triclosan, like other pesticides, is a poison. If it can affect bacteria, it can affect other things too. The problem is you can not control what it is affecting!
Skin is the largest organ of the body. Whatever you put on it will be immediately absorbed withing 5 seconds. Triclosan is linked with liver damage so as it is absorbed through the skin it goes straight for the liver!
“Swap Out” this….
…for this.

I’m so excited to do this. I use the H2 at home and love it! I just ordered the Basic G to make my own sanitizer. I was just thinking about the alcohol smell as I put sanitizer on the kids after a Costco trip yesterday.
Keep posting stuff like this i really like it.
I just made this hand sanitizer and blogged about it. Thanks for the “recipe”!
You’re welcome! Thank you for visiting and applying it Debbie!
