5 Tips for Understanding the Role of Vitamins in Pregnancy

There must be something in the water!  It seems like everyone I know is getting pregnant!  This is such an exciting time, yet invokes many questions as well.

I’ve been asked many questions lately in regards to pregnancy and which vitamins are “safe” to take while pregnant.  As women, we have an innate desire to protect and to do what is best for our children.  That desire fueled me, as well as many other women, to investigate just what I was putting in my body as well as what nutrients I needed.   So in regards to the safety of vitamins while you’re pregnant, here are a few thoughts. Many of you reading this may already know these things, so I’m not trying to “insult your intelligence!”

These 5 tips are things that I learned throughout my pregnancies and I hope that you will find them helpful.

TIP #1: Pregnancy is Not a Disease

Just because you get pregnant, does not mean you stop living and doing those things that help promote health when you weren’t pregnant. You don’t stop taking vitamins or stop exercising (unless you have a condition in which your doctor has deemed exercise dangerous).  The doctors kind of make you feel like when you get pregnant you need to shift and change everything because you are now pregnant. It’s actually quite the opposite.  When you are pregnant you should be doing MORE of what works for you when NOT pregnant. In regards to exercise, I do not mean do more, but don’t stop, as if you have a disease and can no longer work out. Just do so wisely. Its the same with supplements. Know what you are taking, what it’s purpose is for, and how much your body needs (not your un-pregnant body, but a body that is creating life!).  There is a greater need when pregnant.

TIP #2: Your Pregnant Body is in Greater Need

When pregnant, every cell of the baby comes from somewhere. It will come from what you put in your body or from YOU.  A baby is not created from nothing but from cells that need nutrients and large amounts of amino acids (the building blocks of protein).  If you are not getting these, the baby will pull the amino acids from your muscles, organs, and cells. This leaves your depleted and feeling yucky.

TIP #3: Shaklee Vitamins are as Close to Nature as Possible

Vitamins are not like medicine.  Because medicine is synthetic and unnatural, it is possible to overdose and cause severe problems.  Over 100,000 people die yearly from this, and well into the millions over the past 30 years.  Only 4 cases have ever been heard of in regards to vitamin “overdose” and these were unreported (meaning, there was no confirmation in death that the vitamin overdose was really the cause).

Now, It is very wise to check the vitamins brand you take because not all vitamins are the same. Some can actually do more harm then good because they are synthetic, meaning they are produced in a lab somewhere to mimic the real think. Your body rejects this and unnatural. See the different types of vitamins here.

Shaklee vitamins are different, however, in that they are like eating food (obviously nothing is as good as the real thing, but it is as close as you can get in a pill form!). So to avoid vitamins while pregnant is like saying “I can’t eat too many apples. It might hurt me.”  You can’t over-dose on apples or spinach (again, remembering all things in moderation).

TIP #4: Understanding Shaklee Label

By FDA standards, vitamin companies must label their products certain ways thus you will sometimes find “Ask your health care professional if pregnant or nursing.”  Herb Lax is a primary example. If anything has a laxative effect it must be labeled as such. Herb Lax is comprised of 9 different herbs in which one has a laxative effective, thus the appropriate labeling. Many companies do not adhere to FDA standards and so you will not find the appropriate labeling on the bottle. So although the label may read “Ask your health care professional if pregnant” does NOT in any way mean a pregnant lady should avoid this product…this is just following proper FDA protocol (Which, btw, is WAY higher and more stringent for natural vitamin companies than it is for drug companies. New drugs come out every day without any human testing. This is dangerous and oftentimes deathly to the consumer, yet the FDA allows it. Shaklee, on the other hand, does millions of dollars of research, only tests their products on humans, and 340 quality control test on every individual ingredient before a product is released each time. Backwards, huh? There is no money in health care, therefore there are a lot more “hoops” for natural companies to jump through.)

In the example of Herb Lax, a pregnant woman can highly benefit from the product in that toxemia is becoming more and more common among pregnant women who have trouble eliminating waste from their colon. HerbLax IS NOT a laxative but helps to loosen junk that sits in the colon day after day, building up, blocking nutrient receptions in the colon, and eventually creating toxic overload and an inability in the body to absorb nutrients (all nutrient receptor sites are in the colon. If these are blocked, your body misses out on valuable nutrients!).

TIP #5: Know what the Baby and You Need, And When

Throughout the different stages of pregnancy, the baby is developing different things. Knowing what is going on in your body can help you know what to take and when. I’m working on this blog in full soon, but some examples are:

  • Protein is HUGE for the early stages (and throughout) because the baby is just developing and those cells come from somewhere.  Protein will also help keep hormone levels even and help ward of nausea. It also makes you feel more full than less nutrient dense carbs. Take in morning and again at night to keep off hunger during the night and allow the body to build and repair while you sleep.  This is proteins primary function–building, repairing, and healing.  Nighttime is the primary time for this function.
  • Vitamin B (that has all 12 Bs in the PERFECT ratio that they are found in nature; not taking one B and overloading on it. i.e B12, or B6. Anytime B occurs in nature it is with all 12 and in perfect ratio.): This is crucial for many development things but folic acid is necessary to prevent spina bifida.  Also can help with uterine cramps so taken in large doses right before and during labor can help ease the pain of contractions.
  • Lecithin: Helps in later stage (around 6-7 months) when the brain is going through rapid growth. Lecithin will increase the amount of brain synapses that the baby has.
  • Herb-Lax: Prevents toxemia and helps with constipation, thus preventing the ever dreaded hemorrhoids that pregnant women can get.
  • Calcium/Magnesium (Called Osteomatrix) : Aids in building strong bones, but the Protein is just as, if not more, crucial than Calcium.  Bones are primarily made up of water and amino acids, not calcium like most people think.  Calcium is also huge for acid reflux as the baby gets bigger and pushes your stomach up higher to your esophagus. Within 5 minutes, chewable cal/mag (or about 10-15 for the regular OsteoMatrix) will soothe the worst case.  Calcium, like B, can also help with uterine cramps so taken in large doses right before and during labor can help ease the pain of contractions.
  • Multivitamin (VitaLea): The body needs a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals for various functions and development. Shaklee’s multi (as well as all of their vitamins) are bioavailable (meaning the body can get to the nutrients and use them) and will be absorbed. The scientist, doctor, and nutritionist team that develops Shaklee vitamins have tested which nutrients should be paired together to optimize absorption in the body.  A poorly manufactured vitamin does not take this into consideration and you basically are paying for expensive pee!
  • Omega 3′s and 6s (in the form of GLA): Important for brain development and hormone balancing.

FEBRUARY 2010

Disappearing Varicose Veins

I know it’s winter so you aren’t running around outside in your shorts or skirts, but as soon as January is over most folks around here make the change to spring and all that comes with it. It might be more of a mental change (hope?), but February brings the reminder that short and swimsuit season is just around the corner! So, how are those varicose veins treating you? For some of you they might be physically painful, but for the vast majority of you I would venture to guess that they are more painful to the eye than anything else. I’ve had clients who are embarrassed to wear shorts in the clinic because of what their legs look like due to their varicosities. If they aren’t comfortable in a one-on-one environment, think how self-conscious they must get in public.

I’m sure you’ve heard several reasons why you have them: prolonged standing, pregnancy, age, obesity, etc. But have you ever stopped to actually think through these ’causes’? And, have you ever thought about why you have them on one leg and not the other? Or, why they are worse on one ankle or knee than the other? Think back to the ’causes’ from above. Wouldn’t all of these ’causes’ result in the varicosities being equal on both sides of the body? Correct me if I’m wrong, but if you’re standing with both legs, your varicose veins should be the same. My wife has birthed one child and our second is one the way. Varicose veins? Nope. My sister has birthed two kids. Varicose veins? Yep. So, is pregnancy really to blame? I don’t think so. And, what about ‘age’ being a cause? If age is to blame, your varicosities should look exactly the same on both sides of the body. If one knee has more varicose veins than the other (and if age is the contributing factor), that would suggest that your knees are different ages…right? And, when age is used as a ’cause’, I always sit back and wonder when I’ll turn that magical age and be given the ‘gift’ of varicose veins! Is it 32, 47, 51, 65? And then there’s obesity. While I agree that being overweight isn’t healthy, I don’t believe it’s a determining factor with varicose veins. If it is, and your varicosities aren’t equal on both sides of your body, that means that one side, or knee, or ankle, is ‘fatter’ than the other. That just doesn’t make sense.

So, enough about the actual veins. Let’s get to why I’m writing on this subject. I’m writing to give you hope that you don’t have to have them! No, I’m not talking about getting them injected with saline. And, I’m not talking about expensive and uncomfortable compression socks. I’m talking about actually getting rid of them: getting to the “WHY” behind having them in the first place.

For those of you who know about Egoscue or have read my articles before, you know we look at the body from a posture perspective. We look at ‘position’ of the body rather than ‘condition’ of the body. The good news is that your circulatory system and varicose veins are no different!

Take a look at this photo

Varicose Veins

Does anything look ‘off’ to you? First of all, notice the difference between the varicosities when comparing her left and right legs. Her veins are much worse on the left leg than the right. Obviously there’s a huge difference in the before and after photos. It looks like the treatment worked, but expand your view. Look at her knee and foot/ankle position. Notice the different angles her femurs (big leg bone) are sitting at. Her left femur is at a much greater angle toward the knee joint, and as a result, the tibia and fibula are now traveling down at an angle toward the ankle joint/foot. Keep in mind that the femur should be sitting directly above the tibia in a straight line. Also take note of the direction her knee caps are pointing. They should be pointing straight back toward the camera. And, her feet should be pointing at the camera as well. Notice that her knee caps and feet not only turn out, but they turn out at different angles. Her left foot and knee cap are pointed to 11 o’clock while her right foot and knee cap are pointed to 2 o’clock. This is a recipe for disaster!

The circulatory system can’t function properly in this environment. Think about your circulatory system in terms of a highway. Now, imagine that highway under construction. If you take four lanes of traffic and reroute everyone to a one-lane side road, things will slow down. Yes, things will be moving, but there will be a serious traffic jam! Your circulatory system is no different. With the ankle and knee joints in a compromised position (‘under construction’), you are now asking four lanes of traffic to take to the backroads. Yes, you’ll get to where you’re doing, but there will be a slowing down; a domino effect.

It’s not the fault of standing too long, being pregnant, age or obesity (or even a faulty valve). It’s nothing more than a posture problem. Remember: position vs. condition. So, how do we correct the cause, rather than treating the effect? Honestly, it’s simple. The e-cise below, called Supine Groin Progressive, or “The Tower”, will help reconnect the kinetic chain and get your ankle, knee, and hip functioning as a unit again. The Tower is THE key aspect of our therapy. It’s the most powerful e-cise we have. It’s designed to bring the ankle, knee, hip and shoulder joints back to their proper position while allowing the muscles of the body to return to their proper length and tension. If you don’t have the Tower, you can find it at www.therapyzone.com. For those of you struggling with any type of chronic pain, it will most definitely help that as well.

“I Can Sleep Again!”
-Testimonial from client with bulging discs.

I have two bulging discs in my lower back and had an MRI the week I came to Egoscue. When I came to the clinic I had been in the car for over seven hours and was in a lot of pain. I have lived in this sort of pain for years and have not slept well or at all. I was not in good shape physically or emotionally.

The very first day I came into the clinic hurting, and I left with no discomfort! I SLEPT through the night-a first for me in years. I mean, I really slept-did not wake up at all. Believe me, I’m not the only one happy-my family cannot believe me!

I am so very thankful to have found Egoscue. I have been given the opportunity to live. I am now sleeping. I have so much more energy because it doesn’t hurt to move. I do not have to be told to do my e-cises; I do them with great enthusiasm and because I am so glad to have them. My life is so different and I am so very glad I have been helped by Egoscue.

I now have the promise and possibility of being able to live and enjoy my life without constant pain. The reality that even if I have a setback-I do have two bulging discs-I can get better, even if something sets me way back!

I believe I have the opportunity to have a LIFE, not just an existence. I was scheduled for another back surgery. Now, I don’t believe I will ever have back surgery again because of Egoscue and the methods I have been made aware of. Thanks!

How to Schedule a Newborn

Pregnancy and Post

How to Schedule a Newborn

I used this routine with all of my children and it was a lifesaver!  It gets them on a great schedule, sleeping through the night earlier, and just overall, helps them to be very content. I don’t think any kid likes being in charge…Deep down inside they want someone to set the boundaries for them so they don’t feel out of control of themselves (which is what happens when  a child is left to his own).

So even from the time of infancy, a good schedule can begin to develop good boundaries in our children and a strong sense of Mommy and Daddy being in charge—not in a controlling sort of way, just in a protective way.  Studies show that children who are allowed to “call the shots” as an infant for when they want to eat (i.e. every time the baby cries you feed him) develop into children who are more demanding and expect their own way.  We have seen this play out in our children, in the opposite way. Each of our kids has developed a strong sense of time, schedules, boundaries and most importantly, we have developed strong relationships with them. It may sound funny that a “schedule” could accomplish all of this, but if you are in doubt, try it for yourself.

I never got so rigid that I wasn’t aware of the babies ever-changing needs (like growth spurts or family interruptions). Life happens and you need to flex. But this schedule will truly make you feel like a real person again…a lot faster than letting the baby decide what he or she is going to do!  Hope it helps you get your sanity back!

In the Hospital

Points to Remember

1.  Adjust your routine to meet the needs of your lifestyle, situations, and other children.

2.  Keep in mind that your routine needs to be consistent, simple, and progressive.

3.  Day time feedings should span between 3 and 4 hours.

4.  Night time feedings should be progressively stretched to meet 1st morning feeding.

5.  If nursing, begin with 15 minutes per side.  In a few weeks when your milk has come in good, you can drop bak to approximately 10 minutes per side.

6.  If bottle feedng, a soy -based formula is highly recommended.

7.  While you are nursing or bottle feeding no extra fluids are necessary unless you offer water in-between feedings.

8.  Snacks or juice bottle are not recommended.  They interrupt digestive cycles, condition children to sweets, and ruin appetite for the next meal time.

9.  Remember–this is a sample routine.  Some parents will choose to progress a little faster or a little slower.
