I have a delicious protein bar recipe that I make almost weekly for our kids (and me, of course!) but I decided to experiment this weekend to see if I could make it totally gluten free (the other bars have oats) since I know so many people have gluten issues. These bars are totally gluten free and are so yummy! They taste like Peanut Butter Fudge (unless of course you use almond butter!).

Chewy Flax Bars

by Jenni Oates

Dry Ingredients:

1-1 1/2 cups flax meal (Regular or Golden)*

1 cup walnuts or almonds ground (about 1 1/3 cups whole nuts)**

1 cup Shaklee Protein

Wet Ingredients:

3/4 cup Agave

1/4 cup Coconut Oil

1 Cup Peanut Butter or Almond Butter

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Add Ins:

Chopped Dates, Raisins, Cocoa Nibs or Chocolate Chips, coconut

*Add enough flax meal to make it no too moist

**I grind mine in a Vita-Mix to fine powder. You can also use a nut chopper. They may not get as fine, but that is ok. The bars will still stick together.

Directions:

Mix all Dry Ingredients in a bowl. Set aside.

Bring agave to a boil in a pan on the stove. Remove from heat. Add vanilla and nut butter. Stir till mixed completely. Immediately add mixture to dry ingredients. Combine and press down into 9 x 13 in pan. Refrigerate. Cut into bars and enjoy!

This investigation is somewhat alarming, especially since I personally have been one of the thousands who have grabbed a bag of organic veggies without ever reading the label! But don’t despair. There is still a plan B.

We are a part of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) where we can be assured of what we are eating! Click here to get more info about our local CSA (in Williamson County) or go here to find one near you!

And I think the bottom line of all of this is, be a good label reader! Know what you are buying. Not all organic falls into this category, but we have to be responsible to read labels. This one definitely slipped by me!

We suggest following this plan for 6 months. It takes our bodies years to get “out of shape” so it is vital to give your body proper time to heal and repair. Supplementing AIDS your body in repairing itself, but a proper diet also must be followed in order to see optimal results. Many people have seen this disease improve, but commitment and positive outlook are also very important!

The below supplemental suggestions have been derived from several sources–Dr. Frank Painter, D.C., Dr. James F. Balch, M.D., and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C.

Both Type I & II diabetics have increased requirements for multiple nutrients, including, but not limited to, chromium, magnesium and Vitamin C. Repletion of these vitamins has been shown to improve glycemic control and to slow the development of diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetics also require supplemental pre-formed Vitamin A, due to their impaired ability to convert Beta-Carotene to Vitamin A

GENERAL ADVICE:

1. Glucose Regulation Complex: Support for efficient glucose metabolism and improves insulin efficiency. Alpha lipoic acid, for example, helps make your cells more responsive to insulin so they get the energy they need. Vanadium works with chromium, magnesium, and zinc to help balance your blood sugar, preventing energy ups and downs. Helps curb cravings. May help reduce the amount of insulin or medication that person is taking.

DAILY DOSAGE: As directed on label

2.Vivix: World’s best cellular anti-aging supplement. In laboratory studies, vivix was shown to impact the four key mechanisms of cellular anti-aging. This is a highly purified and concentrated form of resveratrol and other ingredients. Resveratrol research has shown tremendous promise in reversing diabetes and repairing some past damage.

DAILY DOSAGE: 1 tsp.

3. Vitamin B Complex: B’s are associated with sugar metabolism/energy release. Neuropathies, especially with pain/burning sensations) and leg ulcers respond well to the B’s.

DAILY DOSAGE: 2-4 per meal

4. Zinc: Insulin contains a lot of zinc and diabetics seem to lose more of it in their urine. It is also an important component of over 90 body enzymes. It is also important for healing and immune competency.

DAILY DOSAGE: Take 1 per meal.

5. Soy Protein: Replace animal proteins, which are harder to metabolize, thus causing stress on the liver. See our other articles on the importance of and many benefits of Soy Portein.

DAILY DOSAGE: 2 servings

——————————————————————————-

Very Important:

6. CoQHeart: Coenzyme Q10 will improve circulation and help to stabilize blood sugar. CoQHeart also helps to support energy production in your cells. This is also important for heart health, which relies on CoQ10 for energy daily.

DAILY DOSAGE: 1 per meal

7. CarotoMax (Beta Carotene and other carotenoids): An important antioxidant needed to maintain the health of the eyes. This enhances the healing of tissues and immune competency, as demonstrated by Albert Einstein College in wound healing studies. CaratoMax has 5,000IU Vitamin A. If pregnant, do not exceed 1o,oooIU per day (2 capsules per day)

DAILY DOSAGE: 1 per meal

8. Vitamin C: Vitamin C is essential for many body processes, from iron absorption, to healing, hormone production, immune function and reduction of heart disease risk. Deficiency may lead to vascular problems in people with diabetes.

DAILY DOSAGE: 2 Sustained Release Vita-C per meal (in a month, increase to 3 per meal)

9. Vitamin E: LDL cholesterol fats in the diet can become oxidized and wind up as plaque (“hardening” of the arteries). Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant and has been proven to prevent this plaque buildup by improving circulation.

DAILY DOSAGE: 2 Vita-E Complex daily

10. Fiber: There are 2 types. Soluble fiber (from fruits, vegetables, oats and dried beans) help reduce drastic shifts in blood sugar levels as well as lowering total blood LDL (the “bad”) cholesterol. Insoluble fiber (daily recommendations are 30 grams per day) is rarely met by the normal diet. For this reason, supplementation is necessary. Diabetics are more prone to constipation, so adding a fiber supplement and increased water intake is important.

DAILY DOSAGE: 40 grams combined soluble and insoluble fibers (various Shaklee fiber products to choose from).

11. OsteoMatrix (Calcium and Magnesium): Magnesium is associated with carbohydrate metabolism and is usually low in diabetics. Low levels are associated with heart disease and retinopathy. Calcium and Magnesium are both important for enzyme systems and pH balance. Magnesium protects against coronary artery spasm in arteriosclerosis.

DAILY DOSAGE: 2-3 OsteoMatrix per meal

———————————————————————

While, as you follow the plan outlined below, you should begin seeing somefairly immediate improvements, you should commit to following this plan closely for at least 6 months in order give your system an opportunity to significantly begin to heal.

First, here are a few DON’Ts:

** Immediately eliminate all fried foods, period. Absolutely none during this healing time.

** For the time being, avoid dairy products, including milk, ice cream, and soft cheese. You MAY eat real high quality butter and hard cheeses.

** Immediately eliminate all high gluten foods – wheat, barley, rye, and oats. No bagels! No cookies. No boxed cereals. No breads. No oatmeal. You
MAY eat rice and millet. At the end of 6 months, it may be possible for
you to occasionally eat gluten foods. But only try them out gradually and
occasionally until your digestive system is completely healed.

** Eliminate all processed simple carbohydrates and sugars. No cookies, cakes, pies, or the like for the time being. No soft drinks or
processed/packaged fruit juices. You MAY eat limited amounts of raw
honey and fructose.

[You can buy granulated fructose in many grocery stores these days and most health food stores.] No “high fructose corn syrup” which is mostly sucrose.

DOs:

** Do eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, cooked or raw. [Hold off on very much raw initially until you digestive system gets calmed down enough to
handle the fiber. Increase raw fruits and vegetables gradually.]

** Do eat good soups, especially good home made vegetable soups. Home made soups with real chicken or beef broth made from boiling down the
meat and bones, plus fresh vegetables cooked down in the broth, are rich
in good fats, essential fatty acids, and fat soluble vitamins that are
restorative to the digestive track.

** Do eat good Biblically-clean fish – salmon, perch, cod, etc. These are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are essential to the healing of the intestines
and colon. No scavengers (like catfish) or shellfish.

** Do rest and get adequate (or extra) sleep during this healing period.

** Do laugh as much as possible. This release endorphins into the blood
stream that are natural relaxers and pain relievers. [Endorphins are
complex hormones that are 10 times more powerful than morphine.]
Endorphins are also involved in the regulation of contractions of the
intestinal wall.

** Do get unstressed exercise several times per week, like walking, swimming, bike riding.

** Do listen to lots of uplifting worship music and meditate on faith-building scriptures. This has a natural relaxing effect on the digestive track.

** Do drink plenty of pure water.

We’re going to start off very gently and build up over the course of
several days.

This is your basic regimen:

1 Herb-Lax

1 Optiflora capsule

1 EZ-Gest

1 OmegaGuard

1 Stomach Soothing Complex

1 teaspoon of Liqui-Lea

5 Alfalfa

On the first two days, take this basic regimen one time each day – such as at supper time.

On the third and fourth days, take the basic regimen two times – such as in the morning and at supper.

Beginning on the fifth day, start taking the basic regimen three times per day – morning, noon, and night – and continue at this level for at least 60 days.

If you are not seeing significant improvement by the end of the first 2 weeks, you may need to add a fourth round of the basic regimen each
day for a while – morning, noon, supper, and bedtime.

At the end of 60 days, if you have made significant improvement, try cutting back by one round per day – that is, try cutting back from 3 rounds to 2, or 4 rounds to 3, depending on what you are doing.

Also, at the end of 60 days, now that your digestive system is healing and getting stronger, I’d like to see you start using the basic health
building program – Energizing Soy Protein and Shaklee Vitalizer along
with your digestive regimen – if you are not already doing so.

What the supplements do:

Herb-Lax

– Gently stimulates the natural muscular activity of the intestine and
colon which moves food and waste along its course. It simply
increases the natural action of the system and is not a laxative in
the normal sense.

– Draws toxins out of the liver, the lymphatic system, and blood stream and helps eliminate them.

Optiflora Probiotic

– Delivers live culture of the “good” bacteria directly to the colon.
The unique triple coating insures live delivery to the colon.

– Helps eliminate the “bad” bacteria and viruses from the body, like candida, e-coli, etc.

– Boosts overall immunity.

EZ-Gest

– Provides natural plant-derived enzymes necessary for proper
digestion.

– Helps eliminate digestive stresses like lactose intolerance and legume sensitivity.

– Improves overall digestion.

OmegaGuard

– Provides essential fatty acids that are calming and healing to the
digestive track.

– Reduces inflammation through the digestive track.

Stomach Soothing Complex

– Naturally relaxes the bowels.

– Calms nausea, heartburn, indigestion, morning sickness, and motion sickness.

– Soothes and calms irritation in the stomach, intestine, and colon.

– Helps eliminate gas and move it out of the system.

Liqui-Lea

– Provides nutrients important to the healing and restoration of the
digestive system, especially vitamins A and D and the entire
complex of B vitamins, in a very easily assimilated form.

Alfalfa

– Contains live digestive enzymes.

– A rich source of trace minerals important to health.

– Helps neutralize excess acidity in the body.

– Soothes and helps heal the digestive system.

– Reduces inflammation.

– Detoxifies.

– Helps deodorize the body and bowels.

– Contains vitamin U and other nutrients that are healing to the
stomach and intestinal lining.

What to expect:

Expect your body to begin a general house cleaning. As the body is
pulling toxins out of the liver and fatty tissue of the body, those toxins
can cause temporary effects like headaches, low energy, minor aches,
etc. Keep in mind that the body is trying to eliminate the garbage.
When the “bad” bacteria begin to die off, they release methane gas.
Also, the ginger in the Stomach Soothing Complex helps the bowel to
release built up pockets of gas. So if you experience increased gas and
flatulence, this is a sign that good things are happening. Expect gas and
bloating. It will eventually decrease and disappear.

Expect foul-smelling bowel movements.

If you are not already using the following, at the end of the first 60 days,
you should add (if you are already using them, continue):

** Shaklee Energizing Soy Protein

** Shaklee Basics strips

** Shaklee Liver DTX

The protein and Basics strips will help you build up your overall health and immunity.

The Liver DTX will help restore normal liver functioning and bile flow.

It will further detoxify the liver and remove excess bile, which will help
the gallbladder.

John Elder is the Clinic Owner/Director of The Egoscue Method Nashville. The Egoscue Method is the world leader in non-medical pain relief. John has been a client of The Egoscue Method since 1994. As a Division 1 Baseball Player for Yale University, John spent years trying to rehabilitate from chronic shoulder issues and a very painful Lumbar disc bulge. After two years of physical therapy and one cancelled surgery, John finally found relief from his pain after his first session with Egoscue and was an instant believer. That belief and his dedication to helping others become self-reliant to regain their lives and find freedom from pain, John switched from client to Egoscue Therapist in the spring of 2005.more

I know it’s winter so you aren’t running around outside in your shorts or skirts, but as soon as January is over most folks around here make the change to spring and all that comes with it. It might be more of a mental change (hope?), but February brings the reminder that short and swimsuit season is just around the corner! So, how are those varicose veins treating you? For some of you they might be physically painful, but for the vast majority of you I would venture to guess that they are more painful to the eye than anything else. I’ve had clients who are embarrassed to wear shorts in the clinic because of what their legs look like due to their varicosities. If they aren’t comfortable in a one-on-one environment, think how self-conscious they must get in public.

I’m sure you’ve heard several reasons why you have them: prolonged standing, pregnancy, age, obesity, etc. But have you ever stopped to actually think through these ’causes’? And, have you ever thought about why you have them on one leg and not the other? Or, why they are worse on one ankle or knee than the other? Think back to the ’causes’ from above. Wouldn’t all of these ’causes’ result in the varicosities being equal on both sides of the body? Correct me if I’m wrong, but if you’re standing with both legs, your varicose veins should be the same. My wife has birthed one child and our second is one the way. Varicose veins? Nope. My sister has birthed two kids. Varicose veins? Yep. So, is pregnancy really to blame? I don’t think so. And, what about ‘age’ being a cause? If age is to blame, your varicosities should look exactly the same on both sides of the body. If one knee has more varicose veins than the other (and if age is the contributing factor), that would suggest that your knees are different ages…right? And, when age is used as a ’cause’, I always sit back and wonder when I’ll turn that magical age and be given the ‘gift’ of varicose veins! Is it 32, 47, 51, 65? And then there’s obesity. While I agree that being overweight isn’t healthy, I don’t believe it’s a determining factor with varicose veins. If it is, and your varicosities aren’t equal on both sides of your body, that means that one side, or knee, or ankle, is ‘fatter’ than the other. That just doesn’t make sense.

So, enough about the actual veins. Let’s get to why I’m writing on this subject. I’m writing to give you hope that you don’t have to have them! No, I’m not talking about getting them injected with saline. And, I’m not talking about expensive and uncomfortable compression socks. I’m talking about actually getting rid of them: getting to the “WHY” behind having them in the first place.

For those of you who know about Egoscue or have read my articles before, you know we look at the body from a posture perspective. We look at ‘position’ of the body rather than ‘condition’ of the body. The good news is that your circulatory system and varicose veins are no different!

Take a look at this photo

Does anything look ‘off’ to you? First of all, notice the difference between the varicosities when comparing her left and right legs. Her veins are much worse on the left leg than the right. Obviously there’s a huge difference in the before and after photos. It looks like the treatment worked, but expand your view. Look at her knee and foot/ankle position. Notice the different angles her femurs (big leg bone) are sitting at. Her left femur is at a much greater angle toward the knee joint, and as a result, the tibia and fibula are now traveling down at an angle toward the ankle joint/foot. Keep in mind that the femur should be sitting directly above the tibia in a straight line. Also take note of the direction her knee caps are pointing. They should be pointing straight back toward the camera. And, her feet should be pointing at the camera as well. Notice that her knee caps and feet not only turn out, but they turn out at different angles. Her left foot and knee cap are pointed to 11 o’clock while her right foot and knee cap are pointed to 2 o’clock. This is a recipe for disaster!

The circulatory system can’t function properly in this environment. Think about your circulatory system in terms of a highway. Now, imagine that highway under construction. If you take four lanes of traffic and reroute everyone to a one-lane side road, things will slow down. Yes, things will be moving, but there will be a serious traffic jam! Your circulatory system is no different. With the ankle and knee joints in a compromised position (‘under construction’), you are now asking four lanes of traffic to take to the backroads. Yes, you’ll get to where you’re doing, but there will be a slowing down; a domino effect.

It’s not the fault of standing too long, being pregnant, age or obesity (or even a faulty valve). It’s nothing more than a posture problem. Remember: position vs. condition. So, how do we correct the cause, rather than treating the effect? Honestly, it’s simple. The e-cise below, called Supine Groin Progressive, or “The Tower”, will help reconnect the kinetic chain and get your ankle, knee, and hip functioning as a unit again. The Tower is THE key aspect of our therapy. It’s the most powerful e-cise we have. It’s designed to bring the ankle, knee, hip and shoulder joints back to their proper position while allowing the muscles of the body to return to their proper length and tension. If you don’t have the Tower, you can find it at www.therapyzone.com. For those of you struggling with any type of chronic pain, it will most definitely help that as well.
-Testimonial from client with bulging discs.

I have two bulging discs in my lower back and had an MRI the week I came to Egoscue. When I came to the clinic I had been in the car for over seven hours and was in a lot of pain. I have lived in this sort of pain for years and have not slept well or at all. I was not in good shape physically or emotionally.

The very first day I came into the clinic hurting, and I left with no discomfort! I SLEPT through the night-a first for me in years. I mean, I really slept-did not wake up at all. Believe me, I’m not the only one happy-my family cannot believe me!

I am so very thankful to have found Egoscue. I have been given the opportunity to live. I am now sleeping. I have so much more energy because it doesn’t hurt to move. I do not have to be told to do my e-cises; I do them with great enthusiasm and because I am so glad to have them. My life is so different and I am so very glad I have been helped by Egoscue.

I now have the promise and possibility of being able to live and enjoy my life without constant pain. The reality that even if I have a setback-I do have two bulging discs-I can get better, even if something sets me way back!

I believe I have the opportunity to have a LIFE, not just an existence. I was scheduled for another back surgery. Now, I don’t believe I will ever have back surgery again because of Egoscue and the methods I have been made aware of. Thanks!

Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones and makes them susceptible to fracture. Literally translated, osteoporosis means “bone that is porous” (osteo= bone and porosis= porous). This disease affects both men and women; however, 80% of those affected are women. This may be because women generally have smaller bones than men, and because at menopause women lose their estrogen protection, which is a major contributor to bone strength.

Osteoporosis is a serious health problem. About 28 million people in the United States have the condition. It is responsible for about 1.5 million fractures (broken bones) each year. The most common locations where breaks occur are the hip, spine, and wrist. Fractures due to osteoporosis of the spine usually affect women after the age of 50, while fractures of the hip start later, usually in the 70’s.

Osteoporosis itself is painless. However, the resulting fractures of osteoporosis are painful. Not only can these fractures be associated with pain, but also with limitation in movement. The decrease in mobility that can occur leads to further deconditioning, which in turn further weakens muscles and bones. In addition, the constant pain and reduced mobility caused by these fractures can lead to clinical depression.

———————————————————————————–

Natural Osteoporosis Plan

When you hear “osteoprosis” the first thing you may think of to combat this disease is calcium. However, on the contrary one of the essential nutrients to reverse or prevent this disease is protein.

Healthy bone tissue is composed primarily of protein, not calcium. Without the protein, all the calcium in the world will not build healthy bones. Therefore, we all need to intake a complete protein (containing all 23 amino acids) each day.

Bone density has more to do with hormone balance than calcium intake.

Fosamax, Boniva, and the like do not build healthy bone tissue. They only block the body’s ability to remove old dead bone cells, creating a false bone density that looks good on a bone density scan but does nothing to build your health. As testimony to this, a major known side effect of these “bone density” drugs is osteonecrosis of the jaw — otherwise known as “jaw death.” Other known and acknowledged side effects include inflammation and ulceration of the esophagus, painful swallowing, stomach pain, indigestion and nausea.

Bones are living organs, just like your liver or brain, made up of living, breathing, eating, eliminating, bone cells. They are not just sticks of calcium that hold your body together. These living cells simply build an encrustation of calcium around themselves which give the bone its solid-like structure.

But these cells live only for a while and die. The body normally carries the dead bone cell away and eliminates it. In the mean time, new bone cells have been produced — mainly at night while you sleep — to take the place of the dead, dying, or damaged ones that have been removed.

Human growth hormone stimulates this process of generating new bone cells. But in women especially, the steroidal hormones estrogen and progesterone play a vital role in generating the human growth hormone and the new bone cell tissue.

Consequently, when the reproductive hormone levels drop in a woman subsequent to menopause or hysterectomy, the stimulation and generation of new bone cells to replace the dead and dying ones that are being removed lags behind and bone density drops.

The intake of an adequate amount of good bioavailable calcium — as in the Shaklee OsteoMatrix – is essential to the development of healthy bone tissue, but just taking calcium won’t do it if the hormones are not at sufficient levels or out of balance. And megadosing calcium won’t help.

First, you need adequate complete protein — which is what healthy bone cells are primarily made of. Also, the hormones necessary to make the process happen are made of protein. So drinking your protein DAILY is vitally important.

But then, bringing your hormones into balance is absolutely vital. You can help this by following my hormone balancing program — described below.

Thirdly, take your broad spectrum vitamins and minerals in the form of Vita-Lea — or even better the Shaklee Basics strips — and adequate calcium supplementation.

If you’ll take these simple step, you’ll be very pleased with the results.

NOTE: If you are taking Cummadin or similar blood-thinning drugs, these drugs block the action of vitamin K and thus will CAUSE dramatic bone density loss. You can and should wean yourself off of these kinds of drugs. You don’t need them if you are taking adequate amounts of vitamin E and vitamin C. And they are far more deadly than they are beneficial. I have had people tell me that their “doctor” told them Cummadin didn’t promote bone density loss — which just shows you how little some doctors know about the drugs that they are prescribing.

So this is what I would suggest you take daily:

1. Shaklee protein — either Energizing Soy Protein or Cinch Shake

2. My hormone balancing program – 6 GLA, 4 Menopause Balance, 2 Vita-E Complex (if you use the Vitalizer strips, this would be just one in addition to the one on the strip). Once you get your bone density up, you might be able to cut this in half (3 GLA, 2 Menopause Balance, 1 Vita-E daily).

3. OsteoMatrix – 4 daily

4. Your foundational vitamins and minerals — some form of Vita-Lea (multi), or better yet Shaklee Vitalizer strips

If you don’t use the Basics strips, you should at least add some additional Vita-C, which is very important
