Swap Out: Hand Sanitizer

Healthy Home, Swap Out

Swap Out: Hand Sanitizer

Good ‘ole soap and water does wonders for cleaning away germs, but sometimes there just isn’t any soap and water in sight!  So what do you do with grimy little hands?  If you are like most, you reach for your convenient little bottle of hand sanitizer to wash those germs away.  But are you washing more than just germs away?  Let’s look at what is actually in that tiny 2 oz. bottle!

First of all, most hand sanitizers have a great deal of alcohol in them.  I’ve even read that children have been hospitalized for alcohol poisoning from them!  Purell and Germ-X contain 62% ethyl alcohol, a little 2 oz. bottle = 4 shots of vodka!

Secondly, triclosan is an anti-bacterial ingredient used not only in hand sanitizers but also in a lot of personal care products.  According to the EWG, it is linked to liver and inhalation toxicity, and low levels of triclosan may disrupt thyroid function. Wastewater treatment does not remove all of the chemical, which means it ends up in our lakes, rivers and water sources.

There are currently petitions being laid before the FDA to remove triclosan from the market, which is one of the key ingredients in Antibacterial Hand Sanitizers.  Petitioners make six basic claims about the dangers of triclosan:

  1. Triclosan doesn’t work in consumer products.
  2. Triclosan’s widespread use increases the chances of harmful bacteria becoming resistant to the drug.
  3. Triclosan builds up in the body.
  4. Triclosan may disrupt human hormones.
  5. Triclosan can react with other chemicals to form dioxin and chloroform, which are known to be toxic.
  6. Triclosan contaminates water, affecting marine wildlife and ecosystems.

It’s useful to remember that triclosan, like other pesticides, is a poison. If it can affect bacteria, it can affect other things too. The problem is you can not control what it is affecting!

Skin is the largest organ of the body. Whatever you put on it will be immediately absorbed withing 5 seconds. Triclosan is linked with liver damage so as it is absorbed through the skin it goes straight for the liver!

The Dirt on Clean

crawling_babyAre you living in a healthy home? You know that good, healthy feeling you get when you’ve just cleaned house? Sorry to spoil it, but you may have just made your home dirtier.

Think of it this way. You wouldn’t let your kids play with toxic chemicals, so why would you let the baby crawl over a floor that’s just been wiped with them? That’s much more dangerous than the orange juice that was just there.

How dangerous? Just take a look at these statistics:

  • Over 90% of poison exposures happen at home.
  • Common bleach is the #1 household chemical involved in poisoning.
  • Organic pollutants, found in many common cleaners and even air fresheners, are 2 to 5 times higher inside your home than out.
  • A person who spends 15 minutes cleaning scale off shower walls could inhale three times the “acute one-hour exposure limit” for glycol ether-containing products set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.
  • asthmaCommon cleaners give off fumes that have been linked to increasing the risk of your kids developing asthma, the most common serious chronic childhood disease.
  • 1 in 13 school-aged children has asthma. Rates in children under five have increased more than 160% from 1980 – 1994.
  • Children are highly vulnerable to chemical toxicants. Pound for pound of body weight, children drink more water, eat more food and breathe more air than adults. The implication of this is that children will have substantially heavier exposures than adults to any toxicants that are present in water, food or air.
  • If your home is anything like the average U.S. home, you generate more than 20 pounds of household hazardous waste each year (the EPA designates toilet cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, oven cleaners, and bleach as hazardous waste).

The information may shock you.
